ABSTRACT
This workshop introduces debating, covering formats, rules, and key rhetorical techniques, highlighting its role in fostering critical thinking, active listening, and respectful dialogue. Through practical activities and real-world examples, teachers will learn to use debate as an educational tool for sustainability issues, gaining adaptable strategies and ready-to-use methods to engage students, promote collaboration, and support informed decision-making across age groups and subjects.

Originally from Scotland and a graduate of the University of St Andrews, Tom Smith has been teaching English language and culture in South Tyrol for 11 years. He is also the co-founder of South Tyrol Debates, a program developed in collaboration with the German school department of the Autonomous Province, promoting debate and critical thinking skills among students.
